NEW PROVIDENCE
TWO FIREARMS CONFISCATED BY POLICE: SUSPECTS ARRESTED On Tuesday 09th January, 2024, police in New Providence successfully confiscated two (2) firearms in separate incidents.
The first incident reportedly occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. in the Western District and resulted in the arrest of four (4) men ages, 28, 27, 24 and 23 years, after officers from the Cable Beach Division conducted routine stop-and-search of a silver Japanese vehicle and discovered a firearm with ammunition.
The 27-year-old male is presently being electronically monitored and on bail for Murder.
The second incident took place around 10:30 p.m., in the vicinity of Old Trail and Soldier Roads leading to the arrest of a 32-year-old male.
Initial reports indicate that officers from Operation Ceasefire inclusive of officers from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force were responding to reports of gunshots in the Montel Heights area when they observed a silver Honda vehicle with three (3) males leaving the area, east on Robinson Road at a high rate of speed.
The officers attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the driver refused to stop which led to a short vehicular pursuit that ended on Verlea Close after the suspects’ vehicle crashed into the wall of a business establishment.
The males exited the vehicle and fled the scene; however, officers pursued them on foot and captured one of the occupants. A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of a firearm. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
NEW PROVIDENCE OPENING OF LEGAL YEAR: TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES The Royal Bahamas Police Force wishes to inform the general public of temporary road closures on Thursday 11th January, 2024. This closure is necessary to facilitate the ceremony held for the “Opening of Legal Year,” which traditionally signifies the start of the year and provides an opportunity for the Tribunal to reflect on its performance and address the Bahamian public on various matters.
ROAD CLOSURES & NO PARKING:
In preparation for this ceremony, beginning at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday 11th January, 2024 GEORGE STREET will be closed to vehicular traffic.
There will be NO parking on the following streets until after the completion of the ceremony:
- GEORGE STREET- BOTH SIDES
- PARLIAMENT STREET BETWEEN SHIRLEY STREET AND WOODES ROGER’S WHARF
RESERVED PARKING:
- BANK LANE BETWEEN SHIRLEY AND BAY STREETS
PARKING:
Parking for Cabinet Ministers will be at Parliament Street North, adjacent to Scotia Bank. Members of Parliament, Parliamentary Secretaries and Senators will be provided parking at Parliament Street South, adjacent to the House of Assembly. Parking for Senior Government Officials and Committee Members will be at the Royal Victoria Gardens. Justices of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Courts will be provided parking through Bank Lane.

NEW PROVIDENCE
POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH OF MALE VISITOR Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an Asian male tourist from New Jersey that occurred on Wednesday 10th January, 2024.
Preliminary reports indicate that shortly before 11:00 a.m., the 66-year-old victim began experiencing difficulties while snorkeling at Athol Island and while attempting to board a vessel he collapsed.
Personnel onboard the vessel immediately administered CPR to the victim, who was transported to Paradise Island where emergency medical technicians awaited his arrival.
The victim, who remained unresponsive was subsequently taken to the hospital where he was examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead.
Investigations continue into this matter.
