NEW PROVIDENCE
POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING
His Majesty Coroner is leading investigations into a police involved shooting that led to the death of an adult male on Thursday 09th May, 2024 in western New Providence.
According to reports, around 1:30 a.m., officers from the Cable Beach Police Division were responding to reports of suspicious activity received from concerned residents in the area of Delaporte, when they encountered a lone male who was acting suspiciously.
It is reported that as the officers were exiting the police vehicle, the male brandished a firearm and opened fire on the officers; in response, one of the officers produced his police service weapon and returned fire, fatally wounding the culprit.
During the exchange of gunshots, one of the officers sustained a gunshot injury to his upper body and was transported to the hospital by emergency services personnel, where he remain in stable condition.
Police recovered from the suspect, who succumbed at the scene, a firearm along with an extra magazine containing ammunition. Investigations continue.
FIREARM & DANGEROUS DRUGS CONFISCATED BY POLICE
Officers from the Southwestern Division confiscated a firearm and a quantity of suspected dangerous drugs around noon on Wednesday May 8th, 2024.
According to preliminary reports, acting on information, officers, with the assistance of the K-9 Unit, arrived in the area of Dignity Gardens, where they conducted a search of nearby bushes, discovering and confiscating the weapon along with a quantity of suspected marijuana and cocaine.
There were no arrests made in connection with this discovery.
The weight and value of the suspected dangerous drugs are unknown. Investigations continue.
POLICE INVESTIGATE TRAFFIC FATALITY
Police are investigating a traffic accident that claimed the life of a 66-year-old male on Monday 06th May, 2024 shortly before 7:00 a.m., on East Bay Street in the vicinity of Montague Beach.
According to reports, an adult female driver of a Hyundai Jeep traveling easterly struck the victim as he was jogging west along East Bay Street.
The pedestrian suffered severe injuries to his lower extremities and was transported to the hospital by ambulance; however, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter while in the hospital.
Investigations are ongoing into this matter.
NORTHERN BAHAMAS
GRAND BAHAMA: POLICE CONFISCATE SUSPECTED DRUGS
Police in Grand Bahama seized a large quantity of suspected drugs in two (2) separate incidents on Wednesday 08thMay, 2024, leading to one arrest.
In the first incident, Drug Enforcement Unit officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Magellan Crest around 12:40 p.m. During the search, they discovered a quantity of suspected marijuana throughout the property, resulting in the arrest of a 43-year-old male. Following a search of the suspect, officers found more suspected marijuana, hashish, and prescription pills in his possession.
The second incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. in the vicinity of Deadman’s Reef. Acting on intelligence, officers from the Mobile Division searched a bushy area and confiscated a large quantity of suspected marijuana hidden inside a discarded appliance. Officers made no arrests in connection with this discovery.
The total estimated weight of the suspected marijuana across both incidents is 19 pounds and 10.5 ounces.
ABACO: OPERATION UNITED FORCE YIELDS POSITIVE RESULTS
A highly coordinated operation known as "Operation United Force" was carried out on Thursday, May 9, 2024 on the island of Abaco. This operation involved the collaboration of various operational teams from New Providence, officers from Northern Bahamas and U.S. law enforcement agencies inclusive of Operation Bahamas Turks & Caicos (OPBAT).
The operation effectively targeted high-crime areas and prolific offenders, resulting in the apprehension of twelve (12) individuals for a range of offenses such as drug and firearm possession and organized crime. Additionally, the operation also led to the seizure of two (2) firearms and a quantity of dangerous drugs.
The suspects include Bahamians, Haitians and one Jamaican national. The public is urged to fully comply with all laws governing the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, as failure to do so will result in individuals being arrested and placed before The Magistrate’s Court.
ABACO: ALLEGED SUICIDE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Investigations are underway into the alleged suicide of a 27-year-old Bahamian female who was found unresponsive in a home on Guana Cay-Abaco.
According to preliminary reports, around 8:30 a.m., on Thursday 09th May, 2024 the female was discovered inside the bathroom with a laceration to her wrist.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted in this incident. Investigations continue.
FAMILY ISLANDS
EXUMA: POLICE INVESTIGATE DROWNING
Police in Exuma are investigating the alleged drowning of a 40-year-old male resident that occurred on Wednesday 08th May, 2024, at Half Moon Cay.
According to preliminary reports, police were notified shortly after 7:00 p.m. that the victim encountered difficulties while diving and became unresponsive.
The victim, after being retrieved from the waters, was examined by the local medical practitioner, who found no signs of life and pronounced him dead.
A post-mortem examination will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigations continue into this matter.
